summer has set in...
We have really enjoyed the start of summer. Grilling out, playing "poolside" and just hanging out as a family. Having our weekends together has done so much for our family's soul. Jack loves filling and emptying the pool each day and Claire loves to crawl in and out.
I let them run naked in the yard, crawling through the grass. Our back yard is so perfect...just the right mix of sun and shade. It's not blazing hot back there, ever. It's truly one of the best assets of our home.

our darling claire
Tuesday was our little Claire's 1st birthday. I can hardly believe it's been one whole year since we became the parents of 2, parents of a daughter, and Jack became a wonderful big brother. She went from a tiny, dark-skinned kitten of a baby, to a persistent, charming, adorable little monkey.
She stands and claps and waves and kisses. She has words for Jack and cat and Daddy. She crawls like a racecar, and can scale a flight of steps in no time at all. She won't take a bottle and has to feed herself. She spits everything out and sneaks food when you're not looking. She screams like a banshee for ice cream and throws EVERYTHING off her tray. She is the world's slowest teether, but gives the best toothy grins, while she wrinkles her nose.
Sorry to say it, but if her momma is around, she will ignore you. She attracts every eye in the store, and each stranger will stop by to tell you how beautiful she is. She refuses to sit in the cart, and can wiggle out of any strap. She prefers to stand! She prefers to play in the rungs of the chairs and climbs all over everything. She loves to read and is so happy to be sung to. She takes off like a rocket when she hears her daddy open the front door at 5:30 each day.
Claire thinks her brother has hung the moon. She saves her best laughs for him, and always wants to do what he is doing. Bath time was made for splashing, didn't you know? Mirrors are a girl's best friend and so are our cats.
She is huggable and snuggly. She has some crazy hair, and her bangs are long enough to reach the end of her nose...but forget about hats or headbands.
She is becoming so independent, but she is still so much a baby.
We love you to pieces, Miss Claire! Happy happy birthday, our sweet girl.

lucky
our kids are so lucky. so lucky that my parents think enough of them and want to see them, even though they live far away. we are lucky that their other grandma will come and watch them when we need her to. we are lucky that their aunts and uncles love them and want to know how they are doing. we are lucky to have skype, and that my parents can watch their granchildren reach milestones that they wouldn't get to see through photographs.
we are lucky that they get phone calls and have people that want to hear their little voices...jack's fast chatter and claire's little rasp. claire even dials the phone and says "hi" when she hears one of my friends on the other line :)
when my parents were here, gdoing the grandparent thing, my mom taught her to put her arms up when you say "claire, how big are you?" it was cute. my mom would curl up and read with jack, she always chooses the best books for them.
marc's mom always brings jack a box full of donut holes, all chocolate, his favorite. and she spoils that baby...holds her the whole time. claire's favorite thing.
even though we don't get to see them all the time, our kids know that they are important. and that's good enough for me!
